The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has carried out a fact-finding project to understand how consumer data is being collected and used commercially. This has become an increasingly important economic activity, and is expected to continue to grow in size and scope in the coming years.
As part of its call for information, the CMA:
• Commissioned research into data collection and use in three illustrative case study sectors - motor insurance, clothing retailing and games apps.
• Reviewed published literature, quantitative and qualitative evidence, including more than 40 responses to our CFI.
• Held meetings and workshops with key parties, including businesses, consumer bodies, trade associations, academics, government departments and regulators.
