What does good risk management look like in a public service organisation? While there is evidence of excellence in, and innovative approaches to, the management of risk across a range of public service organisations and functions, it has been difficult for organisations to judge the level of maturity of their own risk management measures, compared to similar organisations across the country. This was the challenge that led Alarm to create the National Performance Model for Risk Management in Public Services. Building on the highly respected tool published by HM Treasury in 2003 and drawing on the expertise of professional public risk managers, and consultants Det Norske Veritas, the National Performance Model was launched in June 2009.
The Model not only enables organisations to measure current performance against a recognised achievement standard, but also acts as a catalyst for improved performance and informs assurance in governance terms.
